Reaching Goals

Canoe studio space at Canopy This week I made an important goal of mine a reality--I signed on a glorious 300 square foot studio space. Starting in February, I will be running Canoe in east Austin at Canopy, a new creative space with artist studios and galleries. Canopy is run by Big Medium, a gallery and non-profit organization in Austin that also runs the EAST and WEST studio tours.

This is the first time since graduate school that I will have a studio space separate from my living space. Might not sound like much, but that separation will change my day-to-day life in more ways than I can anticipate. In good ways, and probably some not-so-good ways, too, but it's long overdue. Canoe has outgrown the space I currently have and it's taken a while to find just the right studio. I am a bit picky about my work environment (shocker).

I'm working on the layout of the space now and trying to figure out the most efficient way to use my wealth of square footage and take advantage of my lone window. Researching creative spaces is a pretty fun way to kill time on the internet; check out this great post by Chloe for some ideas. How do you lay out your space? What do you wish you had room for in your studio? Any advice on maximizing a single window?

Canoe '12 Sneak Peek

Canoe necklace, shot by Jackie L. Young It's taking me a lot of will power to only show a few sneaks and behind-the-scenes on our Canoe Fall '12 look book shoot. I had the most talented team of friends come together for a beautiful day of hanging out and making magic. Jackie L. Young photographed the lovely Alice Willett, who was styled by Laura Uhlir with hair by Rémi Zehr Do. I'll be dropping some more images later this week, but sign up for our mailing list for the real good stuff (directly on the right bar of this site). We'll be launching the full look book and collection on this coming Monday! Can't wait to share all the new ideas I've been working on with you.

Myth & Symbol Opening

Myth & Symbol Don't tell Austin, but I spent last weekend maybe falling a little in love with Houston. I hadn't been in 15 years, and the city was pretty amazing. Between wonderful meals, gorgeous city parks, great shopping, and actual rain, it was a magical weekend with family and friends. One of the highlights was stopping in at Myth & Symbol on their opening day and getting to meet the lovely Trang, Chau, and BJ in person. I had heard a lot of buzz about the shop and it did not disappoint in person--it's truly lovely. These rather blurry photos do not do it justice, which just means I need to get back there soon.

The clever furniture and fixtures do a great job in complimenting the modern goods for sale. The shop is so well curated and provides a wonderful mix of high and low with a little bit of something for everyone. Case in point, I brought 8 members of my family in and everyone found something they loved. My mom was their first customer, purchasing a pair of Dream Collective earrings as a birthday gift for my cousin.

Myth & Symbol

This Saturday evening is the official grand opening party from 5-10pm, so if you're in the Houston area, be sure to stop by (2537 Times Boulevard in the Rice Village shopping center). They are offering 25% off all clothing during the grand opening, which means it's a good thing I live in Austin.

Bleach magazine

Bleach magazine recently shot their first men's photo shoot and featured our Canoe key chains and fail+Canoe leather cuffs. We're big fans of Jaqueline Fernandez and the Bleach crew, having met them last year through Dog and Pony. Here are some sneak peeks of the shoot, which was also featured in CultureMap.

The new issues launches on February 29th with a party at Beauty Bar and pop up shop with Dog and Pony and Laced with Romance, and DJ sets by Grimes. See you there!
