Giving Thanks

As we get closer to Thanksgiving, I always like to stop and reflect back on what I am thankful for. The list is pretty long, but one I'd like to share is that I'm lucky enough to enjoy and experience a healthy and local eating lifestyle. Cooking and eating is a HUGE part of my life, and not just because I'm married to a butcher. I was raised in a kitchen, making, eating, and sharing food with family and friends. It's a key part of my history, my present, and my future. It's something that most of us take for granted, but we shouldn't.

Someone taught most of us how to cook, how to shop for groceries, what flavors go with what, and how to plan meals. Not everyone is given those life skills, and that's where Fresh Chefs Society comes in. Fresh Chefs is a new organization in Austin, TX that aims to connect youth transitioning out of foster care with community organizations, restaurants, chefs, farms, and grocers, and empower them with the skills necessary to take charge of their eating lifestyle.

This Thanksgiving, please consider making a donation to help support programming for Fresh Chefs in 2013. They only have $2000 left to raise in the next 8 days, so help us spread the word. I've been involved with Fresh Chefs from the early days, and I'm proud that my design students named and branded the non-profit group. Ben & I support this amazing group because they are truly filling an important need in our community and helping to change lives.

*Thanks to all your help, Fresh Chefs Society fully funded! Stay up to date on all their great events here.*

Pies & Pigs on June 14th

Pies & Pigs Colleen Sommers is a friend, artist, baker, and all-around amazing person. She is the brains and heart behind Pie Fixes Everything and a staple at the HOPE farmer's market, our home away from home. Recently Colleen was diagnosed with breast cancer and, like many in the creative and culinary community, does not have heath insurance. To help share the insane burden of medical bills, her friends are putting on an all-out-full-blown-epic-fundraiser party to bring down the farmhouse. Mark your calendar for Thursday, June 14 at Springdale Farm.

There will be a no-holds barred pig cook-off contest between Salt & Time vs. Three Little Pigs--my money is on the butchers. Music will be provided by the amazing Greyhounds and classic Whiskey Shivers, with lots of local booze, and, of course, a pie eating contest! You won't want to miss this special night, so get your tickets (only $25/pop) here before they sell out.

There will also be a killer auction, with goods provided by Schatzelein, Son of a Sailor, Canoe, and others. Did I mention the celebrity chef pies? Featuring Uchi, Lenoir, Addie Broyles, Buenos Aires Cafe, Farmhouse Delivery, La Condesa, La Patisserie, Noble Pig and Trace.

Snag your tickets today here and RSVP on the Facebook to stay up to date on all the new donors and celebrity chefs--more added all the time. I can't think of any other event as fun as this where you'll get to eat such amazing food (for only $25!!) and support such an amazing woman like Colleen. Hope to see you there!

Dinner at Lenoir

Dinner at Lenoir A few weeks ago we spent an amazing evening at Lenoir on S. 1st. Thanks to some brilliant serendipity, we managed to sample every plate on the menu, and each course outshone the other. We had impeccable service and shared a great bottle of wine.

Dinner at Lenoir

Adjusting to the food scene in Austin has taken some time after living in California, but Lenoir hit all the right notes. I am so happy to see (and taste) how much Austin has grown as a culinary city in the past few years.

You guys have heard me gush over Kinfolk magazine for a while, so no need to hold back my excitement about being part of their Austin Dinner event happening on Saturday, 3/31. We will have our Canoe knives and wood burned salt cellars on the table, and are so glad to see a great mix of Austin makers and artisans there as well. Many thanks to Julie and Nathan for bringing us on board.

Kinfolk Magazine

Kinfolk Volume Two from Kinfolk on Vimeo.

We're counting down until the release of issue 2 of Kinfolk magazine, one of our favorite new rags about gathering together with family and friends. These folks are doing it right, taking a clear concept and bringing together talented folks to execute it flawlessly. Their list of contributors is quite impressive (favs include Michael Mueller and Jen Causey), and issue 2 features some Austin friends we are excited to see on paper.
